Carbamide Peroxide Teeth Whitener
There are an increasing number of ways that people can improve their appearance. Cosmetic surgery and other procedures, which used to be done mainly for medical reconstructive purposes, and occasionally was used by the rich and famous, are now commonly used by many in all walks of life.
Another cosmetic treatment that is becoming ever more popular is tooth whitening. This simple and effective treatment is usually inexpensive and painless, doesn’t take too long, and yields great results.
There are a few different types of teeth whitener, but the most effective and frequently used is carbamide peroxide teeth whitener. The chemical compound of hydrogen peroxide and carbamide, or urea, is highly effective in “bleaching” the enamel and eventually the dentin of the teeth to yield a brighter white coloring.
However, this chemical can be harmful for the skin, eyes and respiratory system. When used in high concentration (say 35% or more) it can cause white chemical burns on the gums or skin. At lower concentrations, however, it is safe for use on teeth.
This chemical compound is found in the gel and paste that dentists use in their whitening treatments given in their offices, as it is the best and safest chemical for the job. Still, it is necessary for dentists to protect the gums and skin surrounding the mouth from the compound. To do this, they use a tool to keep the lips away, and a darn to cover the gums right up to the teeth that will be treated. In this way carbamide peroxide teeth whitener is safely utilized as a tooth whitener.
Carbamide peroxide is also found in tooth whitening kits used as at-home treatments. This teeth whitener is used in a concentration that is safe to be used outside the dentist’s office by any adult. The gel used in whitening strips or teeth trays can still sometimes cause irritation or even white spots to appear on the gums and teeth. However, these will disappear in a short time.
Although carbamide peroxide teeth whitener has been deemed safe for use, this does not guarantee that you will respond well to it. Keep in mind that false teeth or caps may not be affected by it, leaving those teeth a darker shade than the natural teeth that are treated.
Another thing to take into consideration is tooth sensitivity. If you have teeth that are already prone to being sensitive, it is likely that they will respond with sensitivity to carbamide peroxide. Even those with no history of tooth sensitivity might experience sensitivity to the chemical.
Still, this chemical has been responsible for the improved smile of millions. Even for those who may be sensitive to the compound, it is possible to space treatments over a longer period of time to decrease the concentration in the exposure.
